Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. The most common form of Down syndrome is Trisomy 21, in which a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21. This extra chromosome results in problems with how the brain and body develop. The developmental problems often do manifest themselves as mild retardation, that is not exactly what “retarded” means.
